| Part 43 Inspections |
 |
|
 |
Part 43 is the NZ CAA rule which covers the period inspection
of aircraft operating under rule part 91. Aircraft operating under other rule parts usually have their own maintenance schedule.
The following is a brief description of the checks relating
to avionics systems.
The time taken to carry out the inspections will vary depending
on the complexity of the aircraft / system and the number
of faults found. Give us a call and we will give you a rough
estimate for your aircraft.
Appendix B (Usually carried out every two years)
Covers the testing of all aircraft comm and NAV systems
This inspection consists of the following:
- Aircraft Records relating to avionics
- Mechanical integrity of avionics systems
- Wiring integrity
- Audio system performance
- Antenna systems performance
- Comm performance
- NAV systems performance and accuracy
- DME systems performance and accuracy
- ADF systems performance and accuracy
Appendix D (Usually carried out every two years)
Covers altimeter, encoder (mode C) and static system testing.
This inspection consists of the following:
- Accuracy
- Friction
- Hysteresis
- Mode C encoder output
- Leak Check
Appendix E (Usually carried out every two years)
Covers transponder system testing.
This inspection consists of the following:
- Power output and frequency
- Transmitted Pulse characteristics
- Receiver sensitivity
- SLS characteristics
Appendix F (Now carried out every 100 hours and two years
for 406 MHz ELTs)
Covers ELT system testing.
The 100 hour (or annual) portion of this inspection consists
of the following:
- Self Test Function
- Structural integrity of mounting system
The 2 yearly portion of this inspection consists of the
following:
- Full bench check by a Part 145 maintenance facility
- Battery change if required (usually every 5 - 6 years
for 406MHz ELTs)

| System repairs |
 |
|
 |
At SPA we carry out repairs to aircraft avionics systems on a daily basis.
Our operation is approved for aircraft maintenance under CAA
part 145 - A2, A3 and A4.
We are very familiar with most of the faults encountered in GA aircraft, helicopters and light commuter aircraft.
We can often give you an idea of what is wrong over the phone.
We can usually accommodate A.O.G. problems within your time-scale.

| Component
Repairs / Overhaul |
 |
|
 |
Our radio and instrument workshops are certified under NZ
CAA Part 145 C3 (Electrical), C4 (Instruments) and C5 (Avionics)
for the repair and overhaul of most components likely to be
encountered in GA and Light Commuter aircraft.
We have very well equipped workshop facilities with agencies
from most major manufacturers.
Estimates can be provided if required.
All repairs are certified with a CAA Form One release to service certificate.
| Installations and Refits |
 |
|
 |
From replacing an old worn out comm with a new unit, to
complete IFR Glass cockpit refits. We can handle your project.
Most installation work is approved in house using NZ CAA AC43-14, this significantly reduces the amount of paperwork and approval time.
At the end of any installation you should make sure you have all the paperwork complete. Typical installation documentation includes:
CAA 2129 radio equipment list
CAA 2173 weight and balance data (or a statement of nil
change)
CAA 337 Design Change Application for approval of technical
data
Updated AD list (the number of radio ADs has doubled over
the last few years)
| Calibration of Precision Test Equipment |
 |
|
 |
All measuring equipment used in the aviation industry is
required to be calibrated in accordance with the manufacturers
recommendations or an acceptable alternative standard. Most
maintenance facilities have an engineering procedures manual
which dictates the calibration frequency or period for each
piece of equipment. At SPA our calibration facility is capable
of performing the following tests to the commonly used BS
(British), EN (European), JIS (Japanese) and ISO (International)
Standards:
- Size (Micrometers, Verniers, DTIs etc)
- Mass (Weights, Scales, Balances etc)
- Pressure (Absolute or Relative)
- Temperature (Thermometers, CHT, EGT, Barfield testers
etc)
- Voltage (Multimeters etc)
- Frequency (Multimeters etc)
- Torque (Torque Wrenches etc)
